End of Year- Simple activities

I don’t know about you, but I am ready for some simple activities for the end of the year. The second grade class that I am working with is working on fairytales. So I decided to put together an activity for a read aloud that I absolutely LOVE. It’s called, “The Princess and the Pizza,” by Mary Jane and Herm Auch.

As you may have guessed, it’s humorous take on original classic, The Princess in the Pea. In this fairytale, princess Paulina finds herself matched up against other princesses to compete to marry Prince Drupert. She has to complete numerous tasks, of course one of them being sleeping on a mattress with a pea under it. The story includes references to other fairytales such as Rapunzel and Cinderella.

I love this book because not only is it humorous, but it also provides great opportunities for students to make connections to the other fairytales aforementioned.

Lastly, have I mentioned that it is filled with LOTS of tier two words? This story is FABULOUS as a vehicle for teaching some tier 2 vocabulary words.

I created a kit for this book because I love teaching it so much. Simply cut, print and play. You can use the vocabulary cards for instruction, memory or even a go fish game if you so please. Quiz-quiz trade would even be great to try with these cards.

The kit also includes a gameboard so that you can give students exposure and practice with these words a few times.

Try this activity here! It was simple and quick to print, put together and use. I hope you try it out and let me know how it goes!
